Dodanduwa Shailabimbaramaya Not to be confused with Pitihuma Shailabimbaramaya Shailabimbarama Maha Viharaya (Sinhala: දොඩංදූව ශෙෙලබිම්බාරාමය) is a Buddhist temple situated in Dodanduwa in Galle District, Sri Lanka. History This temple was established in 2362 B.E. [(1819 A.D.) Dissanayaka, 2023]. The site for this temple is said to have been selected by a Buddhist monk named Dammasara Thera (De Silva & Chandrasekara, 2009). In the past, this temple was known by two names; Udugalpitiya Viharaya and Degalle Viharaya (Ranchagoda, 2015). It came to be known as Shailabimbaramaya when a stone-made Buddha statue was placed in the temple on a day between 1786-1854 A.D. (Ranchagoda, 2015). That Buddha statue is said to have been brought here from Kaveripattinam in India under the guidance of Buddhist monk Koggala Dhammissara and presently it is placed in the image house of the temple (Dissanayaka, 2023; Ranchagoda, 2015).
