There are a large number of Historical and Memorial Trees (Sinhala: ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ඓතිහාසික හා සමරු වෘක්ෂ) throughout Sri Lanka. Presently, some of these have been protected as national or archaeological monuments by the government considering their historic or archaeological value, rarity, and religious or political background.
Trees that are mentioned in ancient texts, popular folklore, and in various socio-cultural contexts are usually identified as historical or archaeological trees and some are just identified as old trees by examining their physical characteristics including size, growth rate etc. Except for those, the trees which have been planted by notable people with a powerful political, religious, or social background are identified as memorial and commemorative monuments.
