Deraniyagala was born on 20 July 1903 in Colombo Sri Lanka (Dharmasiri, 1990). He first studied art at the Atelier, the school of Gate Mudaliyar A.C.G.S. Amarasekara (Dharmasiri, 1990). In 1922, he entered Trinity College in Cambridge, UK where he completed a B.A. degree in Laws (Dharmasiri, 1990). He further completed his studies under several eminent persons at the Slade School of Art in London from 1926 to 1927 and at the Academic Julian in Paris in 1928 (Dharmasiri, 1990; Gunawardena, 2003). He returned to Sri Lanka in 1929 (Dharmasiri, 1990). In 1956, at the 28th Venice Biennale, Deraniyagala was awarded a prize for his painting The Fishermen (Dharmasiri, 1990). Death
