Perimiyankulama Wewa |
Perimiyankulama Wewa (Sinhala: පෙරිමියන්කුලම වැව) is a small reservoir in Perimiyankulama village in Anuradhapura District, Sri Lanka. It is located 1.5 miles north of Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya at Anuradhapura and about half a mile north of the so-called Lankarama Stupa (Wickremasinghe, 1912).
History
Perimiyankulama Wewa is the modern name used to identify this tank (Paranavitana, 1983). This is conjectured to be the same as the Gamani-vapi or (Gamanitissa-vapi) built by King Pandukabhaya (4th century B.C.), the first king of Sri Lanka (Nicholas, 1963; Paranavitana, 1983).
Perimiyankulama Rock Inscription
In the vicinity of the earthen embankment of this reservoir is a rock shelter formed by a boulder lying on a flat rock and on this rock is an inscription belonging to the reign of King Vasabha (67-111 A.D.) of Anuradhapura (Paranavitana, 1983; Wickremasinghe, 1912). It registers two donations made to a meditation hall called Sudassana by King Vasabha and an individual named Naga (Paranavitana, 1983).
