St. Thomas' College, Matara

St. Thomas' College (Sinhala: ශාන්ත තෝමස් විද්‍යාලය මාතර; Tamil: புனித தோமஸ் கல்லூரி) is a government boys' school situated in Matara in Sri Lanka. It is considered one of the oldest English schools in Matara District. History The school was founded by the Christian Missionary Society of the Church of England in 1844 in a bungalow in the village of Wellamadama, the current location of the University of Ruhuna (Abeyawardana, 2004). Later it was brought to the present location and the name of the school was changed from St. Thomas' School to St. Thomas' College (Abeyawardana, 2004). Alumini The renowned writer Kumaratunga Munidasa (1887-1944), The Mahanayaka of Amarapura sect Ven, Madihe Pannaseeha Thera (1913-2003) and the Archbishop of Colombo C. Gnanapragasam are among distinguished past students of the school (Abeyawardana, 2004).
