Wasammale Hill

Wasammale (Sinhala: වසම්මලේ පුරාවිද්‍යා ස්ථානය) is a ruined archaeological site situated near Mihintale in Anuradhapura District, Sri Lanka.  History Legend says that Prince Pandukabhaya (5th century B.C.) hid in Wasammale to avoid his capture by his uncles. King Kasyapa I (473-495 A.D.) is believed to have taken refuge in this cave. In an ancient cave found here, designs and paintings typical of the Kandyan Period have been found. Painting fragment In a cave located at the northern slope of the Wasammale hill are several fragments of paintings drawn on an area of about 4 x 3 m (Pagngnaloka Thero, 2014). They were discovered in 1968 and some scholars such as Ariya Lagamuwa have dated them to the period between 4-7th centuries A.D. (Pagngnaloka Thero, 2014).
