Vavuniya Archaeological Museum

Established in 1977, the Archaeological Museum at Vavunia preserves a valuable collection of items discovered in Vavuniya and its surrounding areas.

T he Archaeological Museum of Vavuniya , Sri Lanka (Sinhala: වවුනියාව පුරාවිද්‍යා කෞතුකාගාරය; Tamil: தொல்பொருள் காட்சிச்சாலை, வவுனியா) is one of the Regional Museums Administered by the Department of Archaeology . It is located on the Jaffna-Anuradhapura main road about 550 m north of the Vavuniya Clock Tower. History The museum was established in 1977 to preserve and display valuable artefacts collected from Vavuniya and its suburbs (Rambukwella, 2014). The Museum The museum preserves a collection of items discovered in Vavuniya and its surrounding areas including Kilinochchi, Settikulam, Madukanda and Mannar. Artefacts include Buddhist statues, Bodhisattva statues, coins, inscriptions, metal, stone and wood items and other monumental remains (Pushparatnam, 2014; Rambukwella, 2014).
