Polwatta Ganga
Originates in the hills above Nakiyadeniya, Polwatta Ganga flows a length of nearly 32.19 km before entering the Indian Ocean at Weligama Bay.
Polwatta Ganga (Sinhala: පොල්වත්ත ගඟ) is a river in southern Sri Lanka. It originates in the hills above Nakiyadeniya where it is known as Udugan Oya (Amarathunga et al., 2013; Arumugam, 1969). It flows a length of nearly 32.19 km before entering the Indian Ocean at Weligama Bay at a point called Polwatumodera (Amarathunga et al., 2013). The Polwatta river has a catchment area of about 235.7 km 2
(Amarathunga et al., 2013). During the dry season, the River is subjected to saline water intrusion at least 8 km upstream (Amarathunga et al., 2013). An important development work of the Polwatta Ganga is its inundation regulator which was constructed in 1954 (Arumugam, 1969).
