Mapalana Ella Falls

Mapalana Falls, also known as Mapanana Falls (Sinhala: මාපලාන ඇල්ල), is a 148 m high waterfall situated within the monsoon forest south of Sri Pada Mountain in Mapanana Tea Estate at Gilimale village in Ratnapura District, Sri Lanka (Kautzsch, 1983). It is formed by the Elle Oya stream rising from Benasamanala (Kautzsch, 1983). The waters finally flow to the Kalu Ganga River (Kautzsch, 1983).

The fall gets its name "Mapanana" from the tea estate where it is located, southwest of Sri Pada Mountain (Kautzsch, 1983). The name now slightly changed from Mapanana to Mapalana for easy pronounciation. The way is marked by road signs and boards helping travellers to walk near the bottom of the waterfall. There are also signs warning visitors about the danger of swimming in the pool below the fall.
