Thangamale Bird Sanctuary Thangamale Sanctuary (Sinhala: තංගමලේ අභයභූමිය) is a sanctuary famous for bird watching situated west of Haputale town in Badulla District, Sri Lanka. It has 131 hectares of land declared as a protected area on 27 May 1938 at the behest of the tea planter Sir Thomas Lester Villiers (Ranasinghe et al., 2017). The sanctuary harbours a number of flora and fauna species endemic to the country. In Tamil language, Thangamalai means the "Golden Hill". .
