The ruined structures at Alakolagoba Purana Viharaya |
Alakolagoba Purana Viharaya (Sinhala: අලකොලගොබ පුරාණ විහාරය) is a Buddhist temple situated in balagolla village near Meegahakivula town in Badulla District, Sri Lanka. Loggal Oya River passes close to this temple.
History
The site consists of the ruins of several ancient structures. Although there is no evidence to prove, locals link the history of this location to King Valagamba (103, 89-77 B.C.) and his queen. It is said that this site served as an abode of Valagamba during his time in hiding from the South Indian invaders who ruled the Anuradhapura Kingdom. However, the existence of drip-ledged caves in the temple premises indicates that this site has roots probably extending to the early Anuradhapura Period.
A Protected Site
The ancient Stupa and the image house on the premises of Alakolagoba Purana Viharaya situated in Balagolla village, in Meegahakivula Divisional Secretary’s Division are archaeological protected monuments, declared by a government gazette notification published on 22 November 2002.
