St. Francis Xavier’s Church in Nuwara Eliya was built in 1838 on land donated by Governor Torrington and is the town’s first Christian church.
St. Francis Xavier's Church (Nuwara Eliya) S t. Xavier's Church or St. Francis Xavier's Church (Sinhala: නුවරඑලිය සාන්ත ෆ්රැන්සිස් සේවියර් දේවස්ථානය) is a Catholic church situated in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. It is considered the first Christian Church established in Nuwara Eliya town (Abeyawardana, 2004). The church was established on 23 October 1838. It is believed that the church was built on a land allotted by Governor Torrington (Abeyawardana, 2004). Fr. L. Singolani was the first priest in charge (Abeyawardana, 2004).
