Not to be confused with Bambaragala Viharaya, Waduwawa Bambaragala Raja Maha Viharaya (Sinhala: බඹරගල රජමහා විහාරය) is a Buddhist temple situated in Wewegama village in Kandy District, Sri Lanka. Bambaragala The name Bambaragala is thought to have originated due to a settlement of pre-historic tribes known as Bambara and Kurumbara ( Abeyawardana, 2004 ). According to another view, the name has come into parlance due to the prevalence of Bambara bees in the mountains ( Abeyawardana, 2004 ). History The history of the Bambaragala temple runs back to the pre-Christian era. Several cave inscriptions written in early Brahmi characters have been found at the site ( Abeyawardana, 2004; Paranavitana, 1970). During the Polonnaruwa Period , this temple is believed to have served as a forest hermitage for Buddhist monks (Rajapakse, 2016).
