Lakegala | Mythical Palace Site of Ravana of Fabricated Ramayana
Lakegala (Sinhala: ලකේගල) is a conical-shaped mountain located near Meemure village in Matale District, Sri Lanka. The conical-shaped mountain rises to a height of about 1,255 m (4117.45 ft.) above mean sea level. Some locals link this mountain to King Ravana, Rama, and Sita, three mythical figures depicted in the Indian epic Ramayanaya. According to them, the palace complex of Ravana was in Lakegala and therefore, his treasures and the jewellery and costumes of Sita are buried in this place (Abeyawardana, 2004). Also, it is believed by them that this rock was broken into 4 by the arrow of Rama (Abeyawardana, 2004). However, the authenticity of the Ramayanaya is controversial and hence it is today dismissed as a myth by Sri Lankan scholars (JRASSL, 2014). .
