Gal Edanda Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple in Kadawatha with remains from the Anuradhapura Period, now an archaeological protected site.
Gal Edanda Viharaya (Kadawatha) G al Edanda Raja Maha Viharaya (Sinhala: කඩවත පහළකරගහමුණ ගල් ඒදණ්ඩ විහාරය) is a Buddhist temple situated in Kadawatha in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka. The temple is popular for its small Devalaya Shrine dedicated to God Visnu. History According to folklore, the history of this temple runs back to the Anuradhapura Period . Evidence of some ancient structures such as stone doorframes, Sandakada Pahana and broken pillars is found scattered in the temple premises (Godakumbura, 1964). The remnants of a dilapidated Stupa of about 8 ft high are also said to have discovered on a neighbouring private land (Godakumbura, 1964). A Protected Site The rock with column base situated in the premises of Galedanda Raja Maha Vihara in the Pahalakaragahamuna North Grama Niladari Division in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Mahara is an archaeological protected monument, declared by a government gazette notification published on 23 February 2007.
