The church was started by renovating a house on the land and consecrated it in August 1910, in the name of St. Philomina. In 1966, a new church building was constructed under the instructions of the famous architect Valentine Gunasekara. He designed the church different from the conventional architecture of the Roman Catholic churches in the country. The church was later dedicated to St. Martin De Porres by Cardinal Thomas Cooray.
