Moon Plains | Agricultural & Environmental Tourism Zone
Moon Plains , also known as  Sandathenna  (Sinhala: නුවරඑළිය සඳතැන්න) is an agricultural and environmental tourism zone located just off Nuwara Eliya City in Sri Lanka. The site is well recognized for its rich biodiversity and high level of endemism. Moon Plains was once a dump zone where the garbage of nearby cities was unloaded.  It was originally a deep valley and since 1996, t he Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council used part of it  as a normal dumping site until it was converted into a sanitary landfill in 2003 with the help of  Japan International Cooperation Agency  (JICA) foundation. The land was cleaned and opened to the public  as an eco-tourism site in March 2014. Located in an altitude of 6,200 ft. above mean sea level, Moon Plains t is surrounded by cloud forests and unique diversity of flora and fauna that has similar characteristics to that of Horton Plains .
