Moon Plains | Agricultural & Environmental Tourism Zone

Moon Plains
Moon Plains, also known as Sandathenna (Sinhala: නුවරඑළිය සඳතැන්න) is an agricultural and environmental tourism zone located just off Nuwara Eliya City in Sri Lanka. The site is well recognized for its rich biodiversity and high level of endemism.

Moon Plains was once a dump zone where the garbage of nearby cities was unloaded. It was originally a deep valley and since 1996, the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council used part of it as a normal dumping site until it was converted into a sanitary landfill in 2003 with the help of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) foundation. The land was cleaned and opened to the public as an eco-tourism site in March 2014.

Located in an altitude of 6,200 ft. above mean sea level, Moon Plains t is surrounded by cloud forests and unique diversity of flora and fauna that has similar characteristics to that of Horton Plains. The mini-World End is considered the major attraction at Moon Plains which provides visitors a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains and towns. Peaks of Pidurutalagala, Kirigalpotta, Single Tree, Kikiliyamana, Great Western, Conical Hill, Thotapola Kanda, Hakgala and Namunukula are visible from the site on clear days.
