Kapugampotha Purana Viharaya (Sinhala: කපුගම්පොත පුරාණ රජමහා විහාරය) is a Buddhist temple situated in Kapugampotha village in Mandaduwa Gramasewa Division in Weeraketiya in Hambantota District, Sri Lanka.

History

According to local belief, this temple has its roots running back to the time of King Saddhatissa (137-119 B.C.) of Anuradhapura. The dilapidated Stupa on the temple premises is overgrown by a giant Bo tree (Ficus religiosa) forming a natural barrier to the conservation process of the ancient monument. The dimensions of the bricks used to build the Stupa are similar to those found in other ancient Stupas in the country. Also, the ruins of an ancient structure, probably a Tempita building (a building on pillars) have been discovered on the temple premises.

A stone used to mark the boundary of the Chapter House of the temple is engraved with the date 2463 B.E (1919 A.D.).
