Senasungala Cave Temple and the Stupa |
Senasungala Raja Maha Viharaya, also known as Senasungala Aranya Senasanaya (Sinhala: සෙනසුන්ගල රජමහා විහාරය), is a Buddhiat temple situated in Aluketiyawa village in Badulla District, Sri Lanka.
History
The history of Senasungala Viharaya goes back to the pre-Christian era. An Early-Brahmi Inscription belonging to the early part of the Anuradhapura Period is found in the Len Viharaya of this temple (Priyadarshani & Gunasena, 2017). The caves with and without drip-ledges, the square-shape Sandakada Pahana and the dilapidated Stupa mound are the main monuments of archaeological interest (Priyadarshani & Gunasena, 2017).
A Protected Site
The drip ledged rock cave, Dagoba ruins, cave with inscription belonging to the Senasungala Aranyagiri Vihara premises situated in the Grama Niladhari Division No. 06-Aluketiyawa, in Rideemaliyadda Divisional Secretary’s Division are archaeological protected monuments, declared by a government gazette notification published on 6 June 2008.
