It is considered the centre of Udarata Amarapura Nikaya. History The history of Vidurupola Sumangalarama Viharaya runs back to the 19th century. It is said to have been established in 1840 by the Buddhist monk, Kamburugamuwe Siri Sumana Thera. The image house and the Seema-mandiraya of this temple preserve valuable murals belonging to the art tradition of the Kandyan Period . A Protected Site The ancient image house on the Vidurupola Vihare premises in Welimada Divisional Secretary’s Division is an archaeological protected monument, declared by a government gazette notification published on 22 November 2002.
