History

Locals link the history of this temple to the Dambadeniya Period. Folklore says that this temple was built by a giant named Veera, who served in the Dambadeniya Royal Court, under the direction of a minister named Vijayasundara during the Dambadeniya era. Several legends centered around the giant Veera are popular in this region. The area where Veera’s wife lived is known today as Weerambugedera which is located about 10 km south of Weerahenegedara temple.
