In order to provide a
better service to the people, the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna government led by Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike decided to nationalize the private bus companies that were at the time operating in the country. As a result of that, the Ceylon Transport Board (CTB) was established by the government on 1 January 1958. To symbolize this occasion, Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Maithripala Senanayaka (the then Transport Minister) made the first trip from Veyangoda to Colombo on a Mercedes Benz (60 seater) bus imported from Germany.
This bus was made in Germany in 1957 and still is in good running condition.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ප්‍රථම ජනසතු බස් රථය
මහජන ප්‍රදර්ශනය සඳහා ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ප්‍රථම ජනසතු බස් රථය කොළඹ බණ්ඩාරණායක ජාත්‍යන්තර අනුස්මරණ සම්මන්ත්‍රණ ශාලා පිටත භූමි පරිශ්‍රයෙහි ගාල්කොට තිබේ.
ජනතාව වෙත වඩා හොඳ සේවාවක් සැපයීමේ අරමුණින් අග්‍රාමාත්‍ය එස්. ඩබ්. ආර්. ඩී. බණ්ඩාරනායක ප්‍රමුඛ රජය විසින් එවක ලංකාවෙහි ක්‍රියාත්මක වෙමින් පැවති පුද්ගලික බස් රථ සමාගම් ජනසතු කිරීමට තීරණය කලේය. එහි ප්‍රතිපලයක් වශයෙන් 1958 ජනවාරි 1වන දිනදී ලංකා ගමනාගමන මණ්ඩලය (ලංගම) ස්ථාපනය කෙරිණි. මෙම අවස්ථාව සංකේතවත් කරමින් අග්‍රාමාත්‍ය එස්. ඩබ්. ආර්. ඩී. බණ්ඩාරනායක හා ප්‍රවාහන අමාත්‍ය මෙත්‍රීපාල සේනානායක මහත්වරු ජර්මනියෙන් ආනයනය කෙරූ ආසන 60කින් සමන්විත මර්සිඩීස් බෙන්ස් වර්ගයට අයත් බස් රථයකින් වේයන්ගොඩ සිට කොළඹ දක්වා සිදුකල මංගල ගමනට සහභාගී විය.1957 වර්ෂයේදී ජර්මනියේ නිෂ්පාදනය කෙරූ මෙම බස් රථය අදටත් ධාවන තත්වයේ පවතී.
