Tabbowa Wewa

Tabbowa Wewa is a reservoir situated in Puttalam District. King Parakramabahu I (1153-1186 A.D.) of Polonnaruwa is said to have restored this tank.

T abbowa Wewa (Sinhala: තබ්බෝව වැව) is a reservoir situated in Puttalam District, Sri Lanka. History The area where the present Tabbowa Wewa is located belonged to the ancient Tabba-rattha, the most westerly frontier district of King Parakramabahu I's (1153-1186 A.D.) 12th-century principality of Dakkhinadesa (Nicholas, 1963). Parakramabahu I is said to have restored this tank (Nicholas, 1963). The restoration works of the present tank commenced in October 1912 and were completed in 1925 (Arumugam, 1969). It was enlarged and improved in 1969 (Arumugam, 1969). The Reservoir The reservoir has been constructed by damming the Nanneri Oya, a tributary of Mi Oya (Arumugam, 1969). The bund of the reservoir is about 1.25 miles long and the water is extending in an area of about 1,500 acres at its full supply level (Arumugam, 1969).
