Civil Defence Force Headquarters Building (Colombo Fort)

The Gramarakshaka Headquarters in Colombo Fort is a two-story Neo-Classical building that once housed the Department of Government Information.

Gramarakshaka Headquarters Building or Civil Defence Force Headquarters Building (Sinhala: කොළඹ ග්‍රාමාරක්ෂක මූලස්ථාන ගොඩනැගිල්ල) is located at No. 11, Sir Baron Jayathilake Mawatha in Colombo Fort, Sri Lanka.

History

Constructed in 1850, this building has been part of the government offices during the British Period [(1815-1948) Manathunga, 2016; Rajapakshe et al., 2018]. It was used as the office of the Department of Government Information before becoming the Headquarters of Gramarakshaka (Civil Defence Force) under the Ministry of Defence (Rajapakshe et al., 2018).

Architecture

This two-storied building bears architectural features of the Neo-Classical style of the British Period (Welandawe & Weerasinghe, 2016).
