Rukmal Ella Falls |
Rukmal Ella Falls (Sinhala: රුක්මල් ඇල්ල) is a 20 m (65.61 ft.) high waterfall located on the roadside of Bulathkohupitiya-Dolosbage road near Dedugala village in Kegalle District, Sri Lanka (Kautzsch, 1983). Created by a tributary rising from the south slope of Doteloya, the waters of the fall finally join the Ritigaha Oya, a tributary of the Kelani Ganga River. (Kautzsch, 1983).
Presently, the fall is known as Rukmal, the Sinhala name for Horsfieldia iryaghedhi, an endemic plant in the family Myristicaceae (Kautzsch, 1983). In Theravada Buddhism, this plant is said to have been used as the Bodhi tree to achieve enlightenment by the sixteenth Buddha named Piyadassi.
