Sluice of Muthukandiya Reservoir |
Muthukandiya Reservoir (Sinhala: මුතුකණ්ඩිය ජලාශය) is a reservoir located in Muthukandiya village in Madulla Divisional Secretariat in Monaragala District, Sri Lanka. It is considered the only major irrigation reservoir project in the district.
History
The present reservoir was constructed by building an embankment across the Meeyal Oya, a tributary of the Heda Oya River. It was commissioned by the then Sri Lanka President J. R. Jayewardene (office:1978-1989) in March 1981.
The Reservoir
Muthukandiya is the only reservoir in the Heda Oya River basin. Its bund is about 1,378 m long and has a storage capacity of 24,621 acre feet at its full supply level. The live storage is 22,820 acre feet while the dead storage is 1,801 acre feet. The water extends over about 1,666 acres. The catchment of the tank is 25.4 square miles and the irrigable area is 2,027 acres. It has one spill and one sluice. The length of the main canal is 15.575 km.
