Muthuiyankaddu Kulam |
Muthuiyankaddu Kulam (Sinhala: මුතුඉයන්කඩ්ඩු වැව; Tamil: முத்துஐயன்கட்டு குளம்) is a reservoir situated in Oddusuddan in Mullaitivu District, Sri Lanka. It is maintained under the Department of Irrigation.
History
The tank was earlier known as Muthu Rayankaddu Kulam and has been referred to as "Man Malai" by Henry Parker in Sessional Paper XLVIII of 1886 (Arumugam, 1969). Restoration works of the tank were commenced in 1959 (Arumugam, 1969).
The Reservoir
The reservoir was built by damming the waters of the Per Aru River (Arumugam, 1969). By the late 1960s, the bund was about 5,850 ft. long and the water extended in an area of about 3,100 acres at its full supply level (Arumugam, 1969). Storage capacity was 41,000 ac. ft. (Arumugam, 1969). The anicut was 18 ft. thick, 15 ft. high and over 200 ft. in length (Arumugam, 1969). The reservoir has one spill and two sluices (Arumugam, 1969).
