Kirama Wewa (or Warapitiya Wewa) |
Kirama Wewa, also known as Warapitiya Wewa (Sinhala: කිරම වැව, වරාපිටිය වැව) is a reservoir in Hambantota District, Sri Lanka. It is situated in Kirama village about 700 m east of ancient Sittam Gallena Viharaya.
History
The Kirama tank is part of the Kirama Oya Irrigation Development Scheme, the earliest irrigation work to receive the attention of the British after the Dutch (Arumugam, 1969) It was breached in 1837 and was restored in 1858-1875 for the maximum utilisation of the catchment drainage (Arumugam, 1969).
The Reservoir
Kirama Wewa is one of the tanks located in the Kirama Oya Basin. At the end of the 1960s, its bund length was about 750 feet and had a storage capacity of 450 acre feet (Arumugam, 1969). The water extended over about 90 acres at its full supply level. The tank is fed by its 5.25-square-mile catchment. The present tank has two spills and one sluice.
