Pallang Oya Tank, also known as Jayanthi Wewa (Sinhala: පල්ලන්ඔය වැව, ජයන්ති වැව) is a reservoir in Ampara and Monaragala districts, Sri Lanka. Surrounded by Senanayaka Samudraya, Ekgal Oya Tank, Pannalgama Tank and Muthukandiya Tank, it is one of the new reservoirs built under the Gal Oya Scheme.
History
Impounding the waters of the Pallang Oya stream, the tank was built by the Gal Oya Development Board under the Gal Oya Multipurpose Scheme (Arumugam, 1969). The construction work started in 1957 and was completed by 1960 (Arumugam, 1969).
The Reservoir
Pallang Oya Wewa is one of the reservoirs located in the Gal Oya River Basin. Its bund was about 2,600 feet in length and had a storage capacity of 93,000 acre feet by the late 1960s (Arumugam, 1969). The water extended over about 2,500 acres at its full supply level (Arumugam, 1969). The catchment of the tank is about 93 square kilometers. The present tank has one spill and one sluice.
