Pannalgama Reservoir |
Pannalgama Tank (or Pannalgama Wewa, Sinhala: පන්නල්ගම වැව) is a reservoir in Ampara District, Sri Lanka. It is surrounded by Ambalan Oya Tank to the northeast, Ekgal Oya Tank to the north, Pallang Oya Tank to the northwest and the Bakmitiyawa Thibirigolla National Reserved Forest to the southeast.
History
Impounding the waters of the Pannel Oya stream, the breached tank was restored as a storage reservoir by the River Valleys Development Board by improving it to a larger work (Arumugam, 1969).
The Reservoir
Pannalgama Wewa is one of the reservoirs located in the Pannel Oya River Basin. Its bund was about 1,300 feet long and had a storage capacity of 22,200 acre feet by the late 1960s (Arumugam, 1969). The water extended over about 980 acres at its full supply level (Arumugam, 1969). The catchment of the tank is about 18 square miles. The present tank has one spill and one sluice.
