Rugam Wewa |
Rugam Wewa, also known in Tamil as Rugam Kulam (Sinhala: රූගම් වැව) is a reservoir in Batticaloa District, Sri Lanka. It is surrounded by Unnichchai Tank to the southeast, Weligahakandiya Wewa to the south, and small Kiththul Tank to the northwest.
History
Restored in 1868, the tank was breached in 1891 and subsequently repaired by the 4th Division Pioneers (Arumugam, 1969). It was again breached in 1957 and repaired in 1958-1959 (Arumugam, 1969).
The Reservoir
Rugam Wewa is one of the tanks located in the Mundeni Aru River Basin. Its bund length was about 1 m 2,173 feet and had a storage capacity of 16,120 acre feet by the late 1960s (Arumugam, 1969). The water extended over about 2,430 acres at its full supply level (Arumugam, 1969). The tank is fed by Mundeni Aru and by its 35-square-mile catchment. The present tank has two spills and one sluice.
