Vavuniya Wewa |
Vavuniya Wewa, also known in Tamil as Vavuniya Kulam (Sinhala: වවුනියාව වැව) is a reservoir in Vavuniya District, Sri Lanka. It is surrounded by Madukanda Wewa to the east, Iratperiya Kulam to the south, Pavatkulam Tank to the southwest and Mamaduwa Wewa to the northeast. The ancient Madukanda Viharaya is located about 3 km east of this tank.
History
The tank known in the past by the name Villam Kulam, is considered one of the earliest tanks in the region (Arumugam, 1969). The present work was restored in 1887 (Arumugam, 1969).
The Reservoir
Vavuniya Wewa is one of the tanks located in the Parangi Aru River Basin. By the late 1960s, its bund was 5,200 feet long whilst the storage capacity was 1,620 acre-feet and its water spread area was 350 acres (Arumugam, 1969). There was a 352-foot-long spill on the left bank and a 136-feet-long one on the right bank (Arumugam, 1969). The two sluices had a diameter of 12 in and 9 in (Arumugam, 1969).
