The popular Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya is located 3 km southwest of this temple. History Locals link the history of this site to the pre-Christian era. It is said that an Arhat named Mahanaga Thera resided here during the time of Prince Kavantissa of Ruhuna (205-161 B.C.). The 21 Riyan height (approximately 31.5 feet) standing Buddha statue at the temple was unvailed on 13 September 2019 in the presence of former President Mahinda Rajapakse.
