Hakgala Botanical Garden

Hakgala Botanical Garden (Sinhala: හක්ගල උද්භිද උද්‍යානය; Tamil: கக்கலை தாவரவியற் பூங்கா) is one of the botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. It is located in Hakgala, about 9 km to the south-east of Nuwara Eliya town. The garden is regarded as the second largest botanical garden in the country (APR, 2012).

History

In 1849, Dr. Thwaites became the superintendent of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya and he served until his resignation in 1879. During his period, two botanical gardens: one at Hakgala and the other at Henarathgoda (1876), were established. The Hakgala garden was established in 1861 for the purpose of experimentation and promotion of Cinchona cultivation in the country (APR, 2012).

The site

Situated under the shadow of the Hakgala Rock (Elephant's jaw rock: 2,170 m), the garden is extending in an area of 69 acres (28 hectares). The altitude of the garden is 1,745 m and therefore, it has a subtropical, cool climate that similar to an alpine atmosphere. The temperature usually ranges between 17-30 °C and the lowest temperature recorded is said to be 3 °C (Abeywardana, 2004).

The flora of the garden is distinctly sub tropical and consists of representatives of the indigenous, montane flora intermingled with those introduced from other subtropical countries (APR, 2012).

A short note for local school students

හක්ගල උද්භිද උද්‍යානය

හක්ගල උද්භිද උද්‍යානය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ උද්භිද උද්‍යාන අතුරින් එකකි. එය නුවර එළිය නගරයේ සිට කි.මී. 9ක පමණ දුරින් පිහිටා තිබේ.

ඉතිහාසය

වර්ෂ 1849 සිට 1879 දක්වා ආචාර්ය Thwaites පේරාදෙණිය රාජකීය උද්භිද උද්‍යානයේ භාරකරු ලෙස සේවය කරන ලදී. ඔහුගේ සේවා කාලය තුලදී තවත් උද්භිද උද්‍යාන ද්විත්වයක් ආරම්භ කිරීමට පියවර ගත් අතර ඒ අනූව හක්ගල හා හෙනරත්ගොඩ (1876) යන ප්‍රදේශවල උද්භිද උද්‍යාන ඉදිවිය. 1861දී හක්ගල උද්‍යානය ආරම්භ කෙරුණේ දිවයිනට සින්කෝනා වගාව හඳුන්වා දීම අරමුණු කර ගනිමිනි.

පිහිටීම

හක්ගල කඳුවැටිය පාමුල පිහිටි උද්‍යානය අක්කර 69ක (හෙක්ට්යාර 28) පමණ භුමි වපසරියක විහිදී පවතී. මීටර 1745ක පමණ උන්නතාංශයක පිහිටීම නිසා උපනිවර්තනික සිසිල් දේශගුණයක් පවතී. සාමාන්‍ය උෂ්ණත්වය 17-30 °C අතර විචලනය වන අතර අවම වාර්තාගත උෂ්ණත්වය 3 °C යැයි පැවසේ.
