Mihintale Alms-Hall

Refectory of Mihintale
Mihintale Alms-Hall (or Refectory of Mihintale) is a ruined building located in the ancient monastery of Mihintale in Anuradhapura District, Sri Lanka.

This building was the place where the daily alms were provided for the monks who lived in Mihintale (or Chetiya Pabbata Vihara).

Mihintale alms-hall
The primary architecture of the Mihintale alms-hall is similar to the Maha Vihara Alms-Hall. The water to the kitchen area has been taken by using a granite spout fixed at the roof level of the building. A large stone trough, porridge boat, kitchen, and stores have been identified on the eastern side of the building. The stone trough has been used as a receptacle for boiled rice intended for feeding the Buddhist monks. Stone troughs similar to this have also been found from the alms halls at Abhayagiriya, Jetavanaramaya, Maha Viharaya, and Inner City.

The building is about 34.92 m in length and 23.49 m in width (Wikramagamage, 2004). It has an inner compound and the entire building is believed to had been covered with a roof (Wikramagamage, 2004). The main entrance was connected with the inner compound and two other sub-entrances were located to the right and north of the main entrance (Wikramagamage, 2004).
