History
Allai Scheme
A scheme to build an anicut across Verugal, cut a channel between Mavil Aru and Verugal, and deepen the Kallar channel with a flood bund and head regulator at Kallar was prepared in 1907 (Arumugam 1969). This scheme was inaugurated in 1928 by Sir Herbert Stanley (b.1872-d.1955), the Governor of British Ceylon from 1928 to 1931 (Arumugam 1969). In 1941, under the Allai Extension Scheme, the flow of the Mahaweli Ganga River was conveyed for irrigation through Mavil Aru and Verugal Head Works (Arumugam 1969).
The original Allai tank, restored in 1890, was modified and utilised for the Allai Scheme to convey Mahaweli Ganga River's waters to irrigation areas (Arumugam 1969).
