Ettampitiya Kotugodella Fort

Ettampitiya Kotugodella is an ancient fortress site in Sri Lanka, believed to be a Portuguese military post used during campaigns in the Uva region.

Kotugodella Fort (Sinhala: කොටුගොඩැල්ල බලකොටුව; Katugodælla Balakotuwa) is a ruined Portugues fort situated near Ettampitiya town in Badulla District, Sri Lanka. Today, only the stone foundations of of the fort remain.

History

The history of the Kotugodella Fort runs back to the 17th century. In 1630, the Portuguese forces led by Constantino de Sá de Noronha (the 6th and 8th Governor of Portuguese Ceylon) tried to advance into the Uva region through the Idalgashinna Pass and the fort erected by them there served as a base for launching their military campaign.
